Spindale, NC (April 30, 2026) - Isothermal Community College has named Matthew Humphries as the recipient of the 2026 Robert Wendell Eaves Distinguished Teaching Award, the college’s highest honor for teaching excellence. The honor was bestowed at last week’s Awards Day Ceremony.

Established by the Eaves family in 1982, the award recognizes faculty members who exemplify outstanding teaching, dedication to students, and commitment to the mission of the college. Recipients are selected by a committee of past honorees based on nominations submitted by students, alumni, colleagues, and community members.

Humphries has served Isothermal Community College for 14 years and brings more than 21 years of teaching experience to the classroom. He teaches courses in English, Religion, and Humanities and is widely recognized for his engaging teaching style, innovative curriculum development, and strong commitment to student success.

A student who nominated Humphries praised both his passion for teaching and the personal attention he gives to students.

“I cannot describe Professor Humphries as being anything short of superior in his field. He is knowledgeable, passionate, and deeply committed to his students,” wrote the student, who also noted his unique approach to providing personalized video feedback on assignments and stated that demonstrated “how much he truly cared about every student’s work and growth.”

In addition to his classroom instruction, Humphries leads Isothermal’s Global Distinction program, which provides students with opportunities for global learning experiences through study abroad programs, virtual exchanges, and campus programming focused on international topics. Through his leadership, students have participated in educational experiences in Ireland and France while gaining valuable cultural awareness and critical thinking skills.

Humphries has also developed innovative courses examining mythology, religion, moral panics, and global culture. His work has earned numerous recognitions, including the Tanner Award, the League for Innovation’s Innovation of the Year Award, and the James L. Peacock Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has also received two World View Curriculum Grants.

“Matthew Humphries exemplifies the spirit of the Eaves Award through his creativity, passion for learning, and unwavering dedication to students,” said Dr. Greg Thomas, vice president of Academic and Student Services, as he presented the award. “He challenges students to think critically, engage with the world around them, and recognize the value of lifelong learning. His impact on our students and our college community is truly extraordinary.”

The Robert Wendell Eaves Distinguished Teaching Award honors the legacy of Dr. Robert Wendell Eaves, a lifelong educator who believed deeply in the transformative power of teaching and service.
