SPINDALE, N.C. – Isothermal Community College is among 11 community colleges selected to participate in Good Jobs Western North Carolina, a regional initiative designed to connect residents with career opportunities in high-demand industries.
The initiative recently announced $3.2 million in grants to support employer-validated workforce training programs at the participating colleges. Isothermal will receive funding to develop and expand short-term certificate programs in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), construction trades and electrical systems.
“We are excited to be part of an initiative that recognizes the critical role community colleges play in strengthening our regional economy,” said Dr. Margaret Annunziata, president of Isothermal Community College. “This investment will help us create additional pathways for residents to gain in-demand skills, find meaningful employment and build better futures for themselves and their families.”
Good Jobs WNC brings together 11 community colleges, employers, foundations and workforce partners across 23 western North Carolina counties. Its goal is to connect 1,200 residents with good jobs over the next three years while helping employers address workforce needs.
Dr. Scott Queen, vice president of Economic and Workforce Development at Isothermal, said the initiative will help the college respond directly to the needs of regional employers.
“By working closely with employers, we can develop training opportunities that lead directly to the skills businesses need,” Queen said. “These short-term certificate programs will give students practical, career-ready skills and provide local industries with a stronger pipeline of qualified workers.”
The initiative is supported by a regional coalition of philanthropic organizations, including the John M. Belk Endowment, The Leon Levine Foundation, Dogwood Health Trust and other partners. Additional national philanthropic commitments recently announced will further support the coalition's long-term work.
Through Good Jobs WNC, Isothermal will continue its commitment to improving access to workforce education and creating opportunities that support the economic vitality of Rutherford and Polk counties.
