Isothermal Community College offers numerous Emergency Medical Services programs to fit your schedule.

We also offer a variety of specialty courses throughout the year to help enhance your EMS knowledge and skills.

Emergency Medical Responder Initial EMS - 4100

This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the EMR educational program shall be the 2009, or most current release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Education Standards. The EMR program must be conducted by an approved Basic or Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The lead instructor for the EMR educational program must be a NC credentialed Level I EMS Instructor at the EMT, AEMT or Paramedic level as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Student/Course prerequisites: A) 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course; B) High school diploma or high school equivalent; or successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum of the tenth grade level.

Emergency Medical Technician Initial EMS - 4200

This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the EMT educational program shall be the 2009, or most current release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Education Standards. The EMT program must be conducted by an approved Basic or Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The lead instructor for the EMT educational program must be a NC credentialed Level I EMS Instructor at the EMT, AEMT or Paramedic level as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Student/Course prerequisites: A) 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course; B) High school diploma or high school equivalent; or successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum of the eleventh grade level. Course may include a clinical component.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Initial - 4300

This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the AEMT educational program shall be the 2009, or most current release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Education Standards. The AEMT program must be conducted by an approved Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The lead instructor for the AEMT educational program must be a NC credentialed Level II EMS Instructor at the AEMT or Paramedic level as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Student prerequisites: A) Successful completion of an EMT educational program. Though a current and valid Credential is not required, an Educational Institution maintains the right to include this as a Prerequisite. B) High school diploma or high school equivalent; C) Reading comprehension and English language skills on the post-secondary level. D) Compliance with the mathematical skills on the post-secondary level

Paramedic Initial EMS - 4400

This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the Paramedic educational program shall be the 2009, or most current release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Education Standards. The Paramedic program must be conducted by an approved Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The lead instructor for the Paramedic educational program must be a NC credentialed Level II EMS Instructor at the Paramedic level as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Student prerequisites: A) Successful completion of an EMT educational program. Though a current and valid Credential is not required, an Educational Institution maintains the right to include this as a Prerequisite. B) High school diploma or high school equivalent; C) Reading comprehension and English language skills on the post-secondary level. D) Compliance with the mathematical skills on the post-secondary level E) Anatomy and Physiology (Minimum EMS-3000). Course may include a clinical component

EMT National Registry - 3079

The Emergency Medical Technician-NR course establishes the basic knowledge needed to provide, under medical authority, prehospital emergency care and to pass the National Registry licensure exam. Students will acquire basic life support knowledge through a combination of classroom instruction, practical laboratory exercises and clinical experience in hospitals. Students will acquire a thorough understanding of criminal, civil and vehicle laws pertaining to the EMT's services; develop understanding and knowledge of human anatomy and physiology; deal calmly and efficiently with childbirth, injuries, poisonings and other medical emergencies such as heart disorders, strokes and diabetes; and in general be able to provide basic life support for seriously/critically ill patients.
