COLUMBUS (June 1, 2023) – Pam Navy recently switched her Facebook profile picture to a photo of herself when she was in first grade.
“I felt like it was a good way to show that I was starting over,” she said at the Isothermal Polk Campus one morning in May. “I retired from a career at the Ingles in Boiling Spring (S.C.) last year and I was just wondering what’s next.”
The 63-year-old breast cancer survivor decided to take care of some unfinished business by earning her high school diploma.
“I started this past February,” Pam said. “I’m from Green Creek and didn’t finish at Polk Central High School. It had just been in the back of my mind for a while. So, I came in and talked to Connie. I had 12 credits left to graduate. I’ve finished five and have seven to go. If the good Lord lets me keep my health good, I want to walk across that stage next spring.”
Pam said that Isothermal faculty and staff have made the process of getting back into the learning environment easy.
“My instructors, Reagan and Bill, have been great in helping me understand,” she said. “When I was completing American and British literature, I was just so surprised I could comprehend it. But I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m really proud of myself, too. This has been a blessing.”
Along with her instructors, Pam credits her family for their great support.
“This has been so worth the time and effort,” Pam said. “I encourage anyone who needs it to give it a try.”
The College and Career Readiness (CCR) program helps students earn adult high school diplomas.
Classes are offered at the Rutherford and Polk campuses during the day and evening. Classes and materials are provided for free. New students can get started any time.
