Engineering Discovery Camp 2018

A partnership with NC State and Isothermal, the Engineering Discovery Camp is designed to engage rising 7th through 11th (current 6th - 10th) grade students in the Grand Challenges of Engineering. Camps are led by licensed teachers who have been trained by NC State. Campers will be grouped by age/grade and engaged in hands-on learning activities that incorporate a variety of engineering concepts. The camp will be held June 18-22, 2018, on the Spindale campus of Isothermal Community College. Each day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Typical Day at Camp

  • Brief large group gathering to introduce the theme for the day
  • An activity will be introduced and instructions provided. Teams will be given time to work on activities using the Engineering Design Process. High School teachers serving as team leaders will be present to guide and provide assistance if needed.
  • Competitions or demonstrations will follow the activity including a brief discussion of the activity with the full group so all campers can learn from each other in the activity process
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon activity handled similar to the morning activity
  • Daily awards ceremony

Student Applications:

Applications are taken until all camp spaces are filled, so apply early. The application must include an essay describing your interest in attending the camp and a teacher recommendation. Be sure to have your teacher's name and email address when you apply.

Program Costs:

The registration fees are $325 per student. Once a student is accepted to the camp, full payment will be due by May 12, 2018.  Information about how and where to make payments and will be provided to students who are accepted to the camp. A limited number of scholarships are available for students needing financial assistance.  The first 18 applicants that request financial assistance are guaranteed a scholarship, the remaining applicants will be provided scholarships based on availablility of funds.  You will have the option to apply for a scholarship when applying for the camp by declaring your need for financial assistance.

Refund Policy

Cancellation in writing must be submitted on or before June 10, 2018 to receive a refund. All refunds will include the amount submitted less a $25 processing fee. There will be no refunds after June 10, 2018.
