  1. How do I know when to apply? This course is offered in fall and spring semesters. You will need to contact the Director of Practical Nursing to set up a meeting prior to the semester you choose to enroll.

  1. What do I need to bring to the meeting? The student needs to complete an application to Isothermal Community College, either on the web page ( or in person at the student affairs office. Then, the student needs to bring: a copy of the ICC admission letter; an official college transcript stating that a practical nurse education diploma was awarded; proof of L.P.N. licensure; any immunization records; and current BLS certification.


  1. How do I know if I qualify to take the LPN Refresher Course? The course is designed for previously licensed LPNs who have allowed their license to lapse. Please see the L.P.N. Refresher Certificate (C45390) Course Syllabus included on the web page for the NCBON eligibility guidelines.


  1. How much does the program cost? The approximate costs are $1300.00 to $1400.00. Please refer to the L.P.N. Refresher Certificate (C45390) course approximate costs document.


  1. How much time does it take to complete the course? The course is designed to be completed in one semester. Please contact the PN Director, Dr. Kim Amos, for a copy of the course schedule. Her contact information is: phone 828-395-1762; email


  1. Are any of the classes taught on-line? The course is designed to be taught as a hybrid, distance learning course. The textbook and exam activities are completed at home. The student will have to demonstrate their ability to perform skills at a scheduled face-to-face meeting. Reviewing of skills can be completed at the student’s current work facility, an agency where the student plans to complete the clinical hours, or in the Isothermal Community College nursing lab.


  1. Are the classes and clinical taught on the same days and times each semester? The schedules are printed in the L.P.N. Refresher Certificate (C45390) Course Outline to serve as a guide for the student so that they can pace themselves and complete the course in one semester. Any student may choose to complete the assignments earlier than what is outlined in the schedule, but all of the modules and clinical hours must be completed within the semester to receive a grade.


  1. Where do the students go to clinical? Each student is required to complete the clinical hours with an assigned preceptor. The student will assist with Director in obtaining potential clinical sites close to where the student lives. Then, the Director will contact the clinical agency to obtain a formal clinical contractual agreement.


  1. Do I have to purchase the same uniform as other students? The student will be required to wear white uniforms or whatever is designated by the clinical agency.


  1. Do I have to purchase my own health insurance? It is not required for our program, but you are still responsible for any health care costs related to any accident or injury that may occur in a clinical setting.


  1. Do I have to purchase malpractice insurance? No, Malpractice insurance is provided for you by Isothermal Community College while you are a student.


  1. Do I have to complete a criminal background check? Yes, if it is required by the clinical agency where you will be completing your required clinical hours. Please understand that if a clinical agency does not allow you to come to their facility based on your background report, you cannot continue in the course.
