GENERAL FINANCIAL AID QUESTIONS
What is financial aid?
Financial aid is funding provided through various sources to help students meet their financial needs while attending college. The U.S. Department of Education administers several student financial assistance programs that provide over $40 billion a year in grants, loans and work-study assistance.
For general information about the Federal financial aid process, see http://www.ed.gov/finaid/landing.jhtml?src=rt.
To apply online for Federal student aid, use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will need the Isothermal Community College code: 002934.
What types of financial aid are available at Isothermal Community College?
Pell Grant - Pell Grant funds are awarded directly to the student by the federal government with payment made through Isothermal. Amounts vary and are awarded on the basis of need and enrollment status. A student’s financial need is determined by consideration of family circumstances, such as income and number of dependents, and also the cost of education at the institution.
College Work-Study Program - The college work-study program provides jobs to students who qualify for financial assistance and are enrolled full or part time. Students are employed for up to 20 hours per week at minimum wage and will be paid once a month.
North Carolina Student Incentive Grant - Applicants must be a US citizen, be a North Carolina resident, be enrolled or accepted for enrollment on a full-time basis at a North Carolina post secondary institution, not be enrolled in a program designed primarily for career preparation in a religious vocation, and must maintain satisfactory academic progress. This award is available to undergraduates who demonstrate substantial financial need and who complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 15 each year.
Child Care Funds - Funds for child care are available. They are limited and students must meet certain guidelines. Download a Child Care Grant Application in MS Word format here or Adobe PDF format here.
Scholarships - Scholarship funds are donated by organizations or private donors. Applications for scholarships are available at the Isothermal Student Affairs office year-round and they must be returned to the Financial Aid office by September 1 each year. If you are not eligible for federal assistance, you can still apply for scholarship funds.
VA Benefits - Please see the Veterans Affairs page for more information.
