Blue Ridge RoundersBlue Ridge Rounders
Tuesday, April 8, 7 pm

The Blue Ridge Rounders is a hard driving, fun loving old time string band whose music rides the cusp of the old mountain way to the traditional bluegrass sound. The Rounders reach back for the old songs and tunes, and gather up the traditional songs that were carried forward into the newer style of the 1940s. The subtlety of their relaxed presence defies what happens when the Rounders rip through a blazing fiddle tune or mourn a blues influenced mountain song resulting in a rich program with many songs that are well-known by audiences far and wide. Group member Bob Buckingham is a continuing education instructor at ICC-Polk, sharing his love and knowledge of music with his students. Classes this session include hands-on learning in “Beginning Old Time Appalachian Fiddle” and the music history class “Poetry of the Blues” where you’ll listen to and talk about the music and its artists. Check out class listing information in this brochure. Visit www.blueridgerounders.com to learn more about the Rounders.

Polk County High School Percussion Ensemble
Thursday, May 22, 7 pm

students with percussion instrumentsCome enjoy the talents of some of Polk County’s finest. The Polk County High School Percussion Ensemble was formed in 2004 after receiving an Unrestricted Grant from the Polk County Community Foundation for new percussion instruments. The ensemble was also supported by the administration of Polk County Schools by allowing a class for percussion students to concentrate on percussion instruments and literature in a more focused environment.

Since its formation in 2004, the ensemble has more than doubled in size and has performed in many community activities, fund-raisers and endeavors making it one of the most popular musical groups of the band department at Polk County High School. Each semester brings new music, new players and new opportunities for these young musicians to share their talents. This event is free and open to the public, however, donations to the band’s trip to China are encouraged and will be graciously accepted.

ICC-Polk Open House
Wednesday, June 11, 9 am-3:00 pm

Join us for what has become a popular bi-annual event. During our Open House, you can enjoy perusing the painting, drawing and photography of our students and instructors displayed in the gallery and auditorium. You might be lucky enough to meet some of the artists and learn how their passions influence their work. All details of the Open House have not yet been finalized, but in the past our medical students have offered free blood pressure checks, blood glucose screenings and other health related information. You can always find out great information about what’s happening right here at your community college. You might be surprised at what you learn! And you can enjoy some great refreshments while chatting with friends and neighbors. One main event of the day will be the announcement of and awards presentation to the winner of our “Name this Brochure” contest as described in the Apr/May/June class brochure. It could be you! Stay tuned closer to the date for more details on the Open House in “Polk Campus Preview” published every Monday in the Tryon Daily Bulletin
