NEW! China-Dynasties and Emperors
Instructor: Ed Kan

By popular demand, Ed Kan has developed this extension of Chinese history to fill in the gaps that the first class, “China-Mysterious and Mystical” did not include due to time constraints. “China-Dynasties and Emperors” highlights many important events and emperors in several dynasties that have historic influences over ancient Chinese history. Each dynasty had different characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. Many interesting emperors expanded the footprint of China. Some dynasties were conquered militarily by minority tribes, which were then integrated into the Chinese culture. If you enjoyed “China-Mysterious and Mystical,” you’ll love this one. But you can begin with this class if you’d like or take them simultaneously. “China-Mysterious and Mystical” begins April 7. See below.

NEW! Nation of Immigrants
Instructor: Ron Cliff

You hear the word every day—immigration is in the forefront of the news and everything political. Today it carries a negative connotation, but have you every thought about the fact that the cliché “Nation of Immigrants” hides the realities of history—America was made and built by, through, and with immigration throughout its history. Some immigration was forced like slavery and indenture, but most occurred because of the hope America represented and the needs America fulfilled. That labor made America the power it is. This brief survey starts at Jamestown and ends with the border fence along the Rio Grande. It conveys the contribution of all of the peoples who made America—including those displaced in the process, the American Indians.

Ron Cliff earned his BA from Notre Dame, an MA from Ohio University, and worked on a doctorate at Cornell. He has taught several college courses on Islamic history and visited Iran before the Revolution, a regional powerhouse. Cliff is a retired corporate intelligence director and intrepid traveler. His approach to teaching—obvious from his descriptions of class offerings—is to present opinionated facts that enhance thinking and demand discussion.

MAY:

NEW! Cracked Caldrons—Oil and Water
Instructor: Ron Cliff

Did you know that 85 percent of today’s global population are marginalized spectators of a consumer economy? But they occupy territories where the resources of that economy are derived. They now ask their share—except there really is not enough to go around, not at the scale of consumption today. How so? Take just two resources, neither of which the modern world can do without—oil and water. This course examines oil and water across the world and argues coordinated programs are needed to insure minimal quantities for all. As a member of this class, you will be part of a discussion on the economics behind these demands and shortages and their socio-political ramifications, which include increasing civil disorder in many areas trying to claim or take a share. The question of the 21st Century is how to manage dwindling resources on a growing planet.

Instructor: Don McKay

Are you a Civil War history buff? This series of classes (one each month) is just for you! “Turning Point Battles” examines three major engagements of the war which, had they turned out differently, the South would have been allowed to go its own way as an independent and internationally recognized nation. Second Manassas (Second Bull Run), Vicksburg and Gettysburg are discussed in detail—what led up to them, how they were executed, and the outcomes. Critical questions are presented as to why advantages were not pursed by the Confederacy. Student observations and opinions are encouraged. The final two class sessions feature a video presentation on the Battle of Gettysburg.

JUNE:

NEW! Why do they hate us?
Instructor: Ron Cliff

Is that really the question? Would you agree that it might it also be our and their reluctance to engage in the dialogues necessary to address the inequities of modernity? The car bombs and the suicides catch our attention readily, and we react like Rambo. But what kind of desperation and commitment drive people to become such “martyrs”? The Gaza caldron of radicalism illustrates a costly future that should be avoided. What is it “they” are asking for? This “they” is largely everyone outside the Western, industrialized world. Those answers are surprisingly close to home in local social criticism. Join this examination of the megatrend of resistance to modernity. “Their” objections often copy almost word for word some American religious criticism of our lifestyles, our secular values. And some of this is the frustration involved in constrained democracy—where authoritarian and corrupt rulers pay little attention to the people.

War Between the States-The Navies
Instructor: Don McKay

Are you a Civil War history buff? This series of classes (one each month) is just for you! “The Navies” features an area of military engagement that is seldom covered in Civil War class presentations or round-table discussions. If it were not for the navies of both countries, the war would have been over in short order—or would have been a protracted guerilla conflict lasting decades. The evidence shows that if it were not for its navy, the Union would have lost the war; if it were not for its navy, the Confederacy wouldn’t have lasted six months. The amount of bravery summoned forth by sailors serving on both Union and Confederate ships cannot be overstated. While the Union Navy began the conflict with nearly 100 men-of-war; the Confederacy had no ships. What naval innovation that took place in four years revolutionized the art and power of naval warfare. By the end of the war, the United States Navy was the most powerful on the globe; the Confederate Navy—given its limitations—the most daring and inventive. A video is shown in the final class.

English Country Dancing
Instructor: John Quinley

ICC-Polk’s Lecture Room will be transformed into a ballroom every Wednesday night so we can have the pleasure of your company for English Country Dancing. “If you can walk, you can do this,” says our dance master who will guide you through the steps. You don’t even need to bring a partner, but you can come in pairs if you’d like. Since the tradition calls for partner changing, the dances are structured so you dance with everyone. This style of dancing is one of the earliest examples of social dance, advocated by Queen Elizabeth, George Washington and Jane Austen, just to drop a few famous names. It includes no fancy steps—a simple dance walk is used for most figures. These forms are enjoyed by dancers from the mid-teens to those in their mid-80s, so make it a family affair. The floor is carpeted and some shoes may be difficult to dance in. Please wear socks so you can take off your shoes for your own safety.
