Wilkins awarded broadcast scholarship

SPINDALE (July 9, 2009) - A student at Isothermal Community College is one of two winners of a prestigious national scholarship.
Mary Wilkins, a Broadcast Production Technology student, has been awarded the 2009 Broadcast Education Association scholarship for two-year and community college students. The $1,500 award will help with the out-of-state tuition, said Wilkins who commutes from nearby Chesnee, S.C.
Wilkins said she has enjoyed her time at Isothermal so far and looks forward to a career in broadcast journalism. She particularly enjoys editing, going on video shoots, camera work and production.
“Isothermal has definitely helped me learn a lot because I get to do so much hands-on work,” said Wilkins. “The more of that kind of thing you get to do, the more you learn about the real work in the industry.”

Wilkins has been busy in recent months in her work-study job with the BPT program. Along with her usual editing and uploading responsibilities, she has been busy converting the department’s old tape archives to DVDs, a “very interesting” process, she said.
The Broadcast Education Association is the professional association for professors, industry professionals and graduate students who are interested in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises. Isothermal has been a member organization for many years, said BPT instructor Jay Coomes.
BEA was established in 1955, initially as the Association for Professional Broadcast Education, but the current name was adopted in 1973. While the BEA organizational name reflects our historic roots in preparing college students to enter the radio & TV business, the members share a diversity of interests involving all aspects of telecommunications and electronic media. Over 1,600 professors, students and media professionals are currently individual members and approximately 275 college and university departments and schools are institutional members. Associate memberships are available for stations, cable systems, advertising agencies, law firms and individual professionals who share BEA's interests and support its goals.
