Be Alert and
Call for Help!

At Isothermal Community College, we not only promote education, we want all our students to know we also endorse and promote safety and security across our entire campus.  Should you ever feel endangered or threatened at any time while on-campus, we ask that you immediately contact security at Isothermal and/or an instructor or employee of the college for assistance.  You should always report any threatening activity to local law enforcement by dialing 911.

The following tips are not a guarantee, but they can help reduce the odds. Despite all this, if a person is ever raped, the responsibility ALWAYS lies with the aggressor, not the victim. Forgetting to lock a door is not a crime. Trusting a friend is not a crime. Walking alone is not a crime.

RAPE IS A CRIME 

Tips on how to be more Aware and Informed to help you from becoming a victim of rape or other assaults

  • Know the real picture. Most rapes are committed by non-strangers and in familiar, social situations.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings.  Always stay in well-lighted areas.

  • Do not take short cuts where you would be in a deserted area.

  • Walk near the curb and avoid passing close to shrubbery, dark doorways and other places of concealment.

  • If you carry a purse, hold it close to your body.  Have your key ready to enter your residence or car.

  • Consider walking across campus in a group.  Trust your very first feeling of uneasiness.

  • Look for others to assist if you need to.

  • If the aggressor is an intimate partner, tell them in a serious tone that you are not comfortable and want them to stop. Now.

  • Believe in your right to your own body.

  • Avoid any headset that prevents you from being focused and aware.

  • If someone's behavior makes you nervous, listen to your instinct and leave.

  • Report any suspicious person(s) to the police.

  • Be alert. Be aware of who else is on the street. Make it difficult for anyone to surprise you.

  • Walk assertively.

  • Take self-defense classes to increase your options and skills.
