Golden
Apple Awards given at Isothermal
SPINDALE (Aug. 20, 2009) -
Seventeen Isothermal Community College staff and faculty members were
recognized this month for making outstanding contributions to the
institution’s learning environment.
The Golden Apple Awards, given
since 2006, were developed by Isothermal’s Learning Strategies Taskforce
as a way to recognize college employees who “dedicate their time and
talents to create a college environment where learning can flourish.”
Dr. Myra Johnson, Isothermal’s
president, presented the awards at last Thursday’s Convocation event,
saying the awards were designed for those employees who “go above and
beyond the requirements of their jobs to ensure that the learning
process flows smoothly for students.”
The Golden Apple Award Committee
made the awards on criteria including the exhibition of a commitment to
excellence; the nurturing of a climate of integrity, care, and respect
for individuals; demonstration of initiative to resolve problems or
improve processes that benefit the college; demonstration of a
cooperative spirit and willingness to help others that exceeds job
expectations; and serving as an inspiration to others.
The winners, with brief comments
from the selection committee about why each was selected for the award,
include:

Evelyn Woods
Evelyn Woods truly
exemplifies what it means to be a “teacher/leader”. In her role
as ESL coordinator, she has been a continual inspiration to both
instructors and students. Evelyn not only shares her values and
vision of excellence with other instructors, she also includes
them, when appropriate, in the decision making process. She is
an advocate for student learning and for the continued growth
and learning of the instructors in her area. As coordinator,
Evelyn encourages all instructors to pursue further professional
development and education in order to enable each instructor to
reach his or her full potential. Evelyn’s personal and
professional influence can readily be seen both inside and
outside the ESL classroom. Evelyn always strives to show
instructors, students and staff the greatest respect. She models
excellence in her position and always pushes herself to do more
than expected or required of her position. She is often observed
supporting and encouraging students even after the long work day
has ended. Evelyn has also served as an inspiration through her
personal struggles. Even while battling cancer, she has always
remained positive and courageous. It is because of Evelyn’s
spirit of cooperation and pursuit of excellence that she
exemplifies the criteria of the Golden Apple Award.

Nan Thompson
Nan Thompson makes
extraordinary contributions daily in her role as Business
Sciences secretary both to the department and to Isothermal
Community College. She willingly shares her gifts, keen eye and
expertise with both faculty and staff. In the spring of 2009 Nan
enthusiastically agreed to share her time and energies with the
Applied Sciences department by helping in their office three
mornings a week. As with any task, Nan willingly offered her
skill and assistance. During a year that presented many
challenges, including increased enrollment and budget
shortfalls, Nan demonstrated the true nature of a team player by
embracing her expanded role eagerly. She willingly accepted any
task assigned to her no matter how big or small. She performed
each task with a cheerful attitude and a genuine desire to help
others. Nan exemplifies the quality of an outstanding, dedicated
staff member who possesses personal integrity and a thoughtful
communication style. It is for her willingness to serve others
and her dedication to Isothermal Community College that Nan has
been selected as a Golden Apple Award winner for 2008-2009.

Marnie Beaver
Whether in her role in
continuing education or serving on committees across campus,
Marnie Beaver exemplifies the principles of Isothermal
Community College’s commitment to learning. Her attitude is
always upbeat and helpful, consistently going the second mile
for nurse aid students, online students and any other student or
instructor that happens to cross her path. No matter how
stressful the situation, Marnie always speaks to students and
instructors in a kind and respectful manner. This year in
addition to her other duties, Marnie assisted with the opening
of a second nurse aide classroom. Even with the added work load,
Marnie never lost her positive attitude or the smile on her
face. It is obvious to those who know her that she values
education and strives for excellence in everything she does. She
demonstrates this commitment in her willingness to take on
additional tasks as well as pursing her own higher education.
Her dedication and commitment are an inspiration to those around
her and it is for this that Marnie Beaver has been chosen as a
Golden Apple recipient.

Vickie Searcy
Vickie Searcy comes
to work every day with a smile, ready to serve Isothermal
Community College and prospective students. Her dedication
drives her to stay late nearly every day to make sure the
Admissions Office is ready for the next day. Vickie’s greatest
asset is her caring and nurturing personality. Vickie treats
every student or prospective student with the greatest respect
and always gives them the time they need to understand the
process, whether it be 30 seconds or 30 minutes. Being a former
displaced worker herself, Vickie demonstrates a compassion for
students that goes beyond the requirements of her job. She never
hesitates to come out from behind her desk and hug a student in
need of encouragement. Her calming demeanor helps to soothe
anxious and scared students. Students feel so comfortable with
Vickie that they often return after they have completed the
admissions process just to speak to Vickie and give her an
update on their progress. Over the past year, even with the
increased number of prospective students, Vickie’s calm
reassurance and patient attitude have never wavered. It is for
her consistent support and commitment to Isothermal and the
Learning College that Vickie has been chosen as a 2008-2009
Golden Apple award winner.

Susan Hendrick
Susan Hendrick
exemplifies everything that the Golden Apple Award represents;
excellence, respect, integrity, care and inspiration. Susan’s
larger than life personality and generous hugs exude a warmth
and kindness that make her unforgettable. Susan’s desire to help
is so great that shortly after retiring from the public school
system she came to Isothermal and began working with students
again. It is not uncommon to hear Susan call a student by name
that she taught or advised 20 years ago. Not only does she
remember each student’s name but also their family, and life
situation. Susan is still able to remember most of her 200
advisee’s names. In addition to remembering each student’s name,
Susan takes time with each student to answer their questions and
provide a detailed account of the steps involved in becoming
accepted into the nursing program. Even with increased numbers
of students Susan never fails to stay positive and share her
bright, friendly smile. In addition to her dedication to
advising and counseling students, Susan also represents
Isothermal in the community through her involvement in numerous
organizations and clubs. Her dedication to Isothermal Community
College students and her commitment to her community make Susan
a deserving recipient of the Golden Apple Award.

Tina Porter
Tina Porter is
someone who is very conscientious and committed to excellence.
Being a perfectionist, it is often difficult for her to ask for
assistance because she feels it is her responsibility to
complete tasks on her own. This fall, Tina reviewed over 386
folders to determine LPN student’s eligibility to test. She also
tried to make contact with each student to ensure that she gave
them ample opportunity to understand the requirements for
testing. In addition to her normal workload, Tina has also
stepped in to share the work load of the testing coordinator.
Tina has administered many of the placement tests plus she is
learning to set up the database for scheduling tests. In
addition to these duties, Tina also volunteered to revitalize
the Student Center trophy case and donated items to update the
appearance of the case. During the past year Tina has been
heavily involved with a variety of committees on campus
including the Campus Life, Advising and ESP taskforces. She is
readily available to assist with student activities and strives
to make the campus more student focused. Tina’s commitment to
Isothermal is demonstrated in her willingness to take on tasks
that are vital to serving students. Tina strives to inspire the
students she interacts with and holds no reservations in sharing
her own story to help build confidence for a student who may be
feeling overwhelmed. Tina’s dedication and commitment to service
make her a deserving winner of the 2008-2009 Golden Apple Award. |

Johnny Smith
Johnny Smith’s
commitment to excellence is exhibited in everything he does,
including his style of dress. He creates a work environment
where his colleagues also want to maintain excellence in the
services they deliver. As a supervisor, Johnny works with those
in his area to set high standards. He not only expects those
standards from others, he expects them from himself as well.
Johnny sets an excellent example and works with Career Center
staff to build their leadership skills by providing staff
development opportunities. As one colleague states, “he also
builds morale by creating a festive environment, and he brings
‘sugar man’ cakes to celebrate our milestones.” In addition, Mr.
Smith often takes the initiative to solve problems to provide
better service for students. For example, this fall he worked
with Isothermal Planning and Development to implement “Reach
Out” sessions in an effort to provide much needed information
for laid off workers. Johnny is recognized across the campus by
students and employees alike for his genuine respect and concern
for others. His ability to build self-esteem in others is
admirable and much sought after by students. He is frequently
visited by students seeking “pick me up” which he always takes
time to deliver. Whether it is working with the Minority Male
Mentoring program, New Century Scholars or serving students in
the Career Center, Johnny consistently strives to bring out the
best in those around him. It is for his encouragement and
service that Johnny is awarded the Golden Apple award. |

Lisa Padgett
Lisa Padgett
exhibits all of the traits exemplified by the Golden Apple
award. She is committed to excellence is all areas of her
position. One example is her ability to manage multiple budgets
and remain compliant with regulations. In addition to striving
for excellence, Lisa also maintains a warm, friendly atmosphere
that is always infused with a sense of fun. She is always quick
to acknowledge and celebrate along with her colleagues when
there are significant events in their lives. Lisa also
demonstrates a cooperative spirit and a willingness to help
others. In addition to helping out with needed tasks in Student
Services, Lisa also serves on the TALC Professional Development
taskforce and generously helps with the meeting minutes for the
Student Services department, ACA steering committee and the
Assessment Taskforce. Those who know Lisa will agree that it is
hard to have a “gloomy” day when she is around. Lisa can always
find a gentle way to speak with an angry parent, address
students misbehaving in the Student Center or ask someone to put
out a cigarette at the visitor entrance. She just has a special
way with people. Lisa is resourceful, friendly, and fun to be
around. It is for all these reasons that she is a shining
example of the Golden Apple Award criteria.

Rhonda Davis
During the 2008- 2009
academic year, Rhonda Davis has demonstrated an
extraordinary commitment in her pursuit of excellence to
Isothermal Community College. As one colleague stated, “I came
to know Rhonda in the early 1980’s while I was a student. The
moment I stepped into her classroom, I knew I had a dedicated
teacher committed not only to the college but also to her
students. She was not only well versed with the subject matter,
but she also had the ability to relate and share that knowledge
with her students. Over the years, I have watched her carry out
these same responsibilities, never wavering in her dedication to
the college or to the students. Rhonda recognizes each student’s
talents and creates a learning environment for the different
teaching styles she incorporates within her lecture classrooms,
as well as in her computer labs.” In addition to her commitment
to the classroom, Rhonda has actively served on several campus
committees during the past year; the Robert Wendell Eaves Award
Committee, Willard L. Lewis Staff Award Committee, and as a
member of the Enhancing Systems and Processes (ESP) TALC
committee. She has also served “behind the scenes” across campus
with various duties, such as organizing Student Awards Day.
Rhonda is always willing to go the extra mile in order to
provide the assistance needed for students and co-workers.
Rhonda embodies the gift of teaching, caring and being an
excellent role model to our students. She is a most dedicated
employee who consistently exhibits her commitment to excellence
with her time and talents for the mission of the college. |

Bret Watson
One of his coworkers wrote:
“Bret Watson has done a terrific job at Isothermal. Not
only with PTK and the newsletter, etc. but he has been a
tremendous help and support with Campus Life… I have seen his
preparations for class and they are very professional. I’ve also
heard several students comment on what a good teacher he is and
how much they like him.” He is a conscientious and dedicated
advisor, and he has been generous with this time, energy and
talents, helping out with volleyball and other activities on
Sports Day; with the Health Fair and Environmental Awareness
Day; and with our campus-wide global awareness efforts. He has
also given his time generously and without complaint to cover
classes for his coworkers dealing with illness in their
families. He is a true team player. Bret embodies and promotes
the spirit of the Learning College in everything he does. The
recent PTK president stated, “Bret is an incredibly hard
working, talented and caring individual. As a teacher he strives
to always push his students to do their best and reach their
maximum potential. He does not tolerate laziness or excuses in
his class but expects everyone to try their hardest at whatever
task is at hand.” Our students, our college and our community
have been enriched by Bret’s efforts in his brief time at
Isothermal. Imagine what the future holds.

Nathan Fisher
Nathan Fisher has
been chosen as a Golden Apple Award winner this year because of
his continuous commitment to excellence and his significant
contributions to the college. This year Nathan made substantial
changes to his curriculum, initiated NCCER certification for his
students, and conducted classes around the construction of a new
multi-purpose shed. In addition to these accomplishments, he
also researched all of the new equipment needed for the welding
lab renovation which he designed as well as purchased and
supervised the placement of all the new equipment. During all of
the renovation and moving around to accommodate construction,
Nathan has maintained a positive attitude and continued to
promote learning for his students. As a result Nathan is well
respected by all of his students and has developed a welding
curriculum and lab area that is state-of-the-art and truly
prepares students for jobs in the 21st century. Through all of
this, Nathan has demonstrated great patience and integrity and
has served as an inspiration to students and peers. The

in his program for many years to come. As stated in Nathan’s
nomination, he not only is deserving of a Golden Apple-“he
probably deserves a whole bushel.”

support for faculty and staff. Sheila provides support
across campus in her role as PC Technician by helping all

spyware, viruses and other malware, insuring that computers
are operational and that faculty and staff are able to

support is to install printers, digitizing pads and shared
network usage; all of these necessary tasks ensure that work
on campus flows smoothly. Sheila always takes time to listen
to employees and helps them with software that at times
reaches beyond the requirements of her position. Through all
the many problems associated with supporting computers,
Sheila maintains a pleasant demeanor and always answers the

it is for her spirit of service and support of others that
Sheila Francis is awarded the Golden Apple Award. |

Jeff McEntire
The Golden Apple Award
was designed to recognize those employees who go above and
beyond to ensure that services and support for learning are
provided. For some employees those contributions often go
unnoticed at least until something goes wrong. These
employees often work tirelessly behind the scenes providing
the necessary support to make services appear seamless to
those who use them. Jeff McEntire is one of those
“behind the scenes” support staff who ensures that network
systems are available to those who rely on them. Jeff
maintains and expands the campus network that includes over
900 network devices. He troubleshoots network problems and
supports employees who use resources located on the network.
Included among Jeff’s many duties are network upgrades, the
security camera network, the HVAC network, and the ReACH
network. In addition to his on campus duties, Jeff also
interacts with the community through organizations such as
Foothills Connect and the IT Professionals Association. Jeff
supports campus activity by maintaining email SPAM filters,
antivirus software, firewalls and Internet content filtering
systems. While dealing with this great variety of issues
Jeff always maintains a supportive and positive attitude. It
is for his willingness to provide support and cooperative
spirit that Jeff McEntire is awarded a 2008- 2009 Golden
Apple Award.

Susan Straw
A variety of people are
needed in order to keep a campus running smoothly. Often
critical links in this process happen behind the scenes. One
such link is the campus print shop. Susan Straw is
one of those people who provide valuable support for others
on campus. One example of this support has been the
introduction of the Micro-press process which allows
employees to send their printing orders directly to the
print shop from their office computers. This process has
been a wonderful, time saving addition to the print shop
services. It is quick, easy to use, and saves much needed
time. Susan’s willingness and patience to teach everyone on
campus how the process works is just one example of her
dedication to serving others. This new process supports
learning on campus by making printing more efficient,
leaving staff and instructors more time to spend with
students. Susan is always friendly, easy to talk to, and
willing to help in any way she can. Her patience and
sensitivity to the needs of others is evident in any
interaction. Susan is not afraid to admit mistakes but
always works hard to ensure that jobs are completed in a
timely manner, often before the needed date. It is for her
pleasant attitude and attention to service that Susan Straw
has been chosen as a 2008- 2009 Golden Apple Award winner.
