By ERIN KIDD / Daily Courier Staff Writer

SPINDALE — Isothermal Community College was buzzing with science activity on Friday. More than 900 sixth grade students from Rutherford and Polk counties attended the Isothermal Science and Technology Expo on campus, which included 32 exhibits featuring some form of science, math, engineering or technology.

“Last year when we did this we had about 500 students. It was so well-received among teachers and school systems that we decided this year to include all of the sixth grades from the counties,” said Mike Gavin, director of marketing and community relations.

The expo included interactive exhibits such as How Machines Know What To Do, Social Networking and Data Center Operations, Sustainability Technology, Electrical Systems, How the News is Made and many more.

“When we first started talking about doing it, we looked at age groups and sixth grade was a good time to start getting kids exposed to broader aspects of science,” Gavin said. “We want to get them fired up early and start planting those seeds.”

Of those exhibits, 16 were selected from local high schools and presented by students. The other half of the exhibits were presented by Isothermal faculty, staff and students along with personnel from community partners including Duke Energy, Facebook and Kidsenses Children’s Museum.

“It’s a learning experience for the sixth graders that attend, for the high school students that present and for our students who do other presentations with their teachers,” Gavin said. “It’s a win all the way around for everyone involved. Plus it gets kids over here so they are more familiar with ICC. They get to start to see the variety of great programs that we have here.”

This year, the expo also included an act by Garry Krinsky called “Toying with Science.” In the performance, he explores the scientific principles of gravity, leverage, fulcrums, simple machines and much more.

“We added the show this year to give the expo a different dimension. We wanted to mix it up so they weren’t touring all day. We split them up so that half of them were getting the tour while the other half were watching the show, then they switched,” Gavin said. “It’s a big juggling act to coordinate who is going where.”

According to Gavin, the ICC expo is included in the North Carolina Science Festival, a nationwide celebration of science that occurs for two weeks every April.

“This went so well last year that we have been recognized by the North Carolina Science Festival as one of their expo events. We have been put in a relatively elite group because we are reaching out to so many people,” Gavin said.

Jonathan Frederick, director of the NC Science Festival, attended the expo on Friday.

“ICC is blowing it out of the water. They are doing it big. We want to remind everyone that science is fun and to see that there are great science education and opportunities in their neighborhood,” Frederick said. “This serves a lot of great purposes. I can’t say enough good things about it.”

Last month, Dr. Myra Johnson announced she would retire in the spring of 2013 after nearly six years as Isothermal’s president.

The college’s Board of Trustees quickly put together a search process, which was initiated this week. An advertisement has been posted in the Community College Times, the main publication of the American Association of Community Colleges. Locally, the position will be advertised in The Daily Courier of Forest City and The Tryon Daily Bulletin.

“We will also announce the position extensively throughout existing avenues in the North Carolina Community College System and in appropriate regional and national community college professional associations,” said Mike Gavin, director of Marketing and Community Relations at Isothermal. “The trustees are very hopeful that they will have a high-quality pool of candidates to consider as they select the next president to move Isothermal forward.”

Prospects are invited to apply until Jan. 9, 2013. The trustees hope to hire a new president by April 2013.

SPINDALE (Nov. 30, 2012) – Isothermal’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, a national college organization for business students, was recognized as one of the state’s top groups at a recent conference.

NCPBL held its 38th annual Fall Leadership Development Conference in Raleigh earlier this month. A total of 178 students, advisors and professional division members participated in the conference representing 26 chapters from across the state.

Advisor Sandra Boyd and three officers, Shannon Whitesides, Pam Bridges and Mary Brooks, represented the Omega Theta chapter of Isothermal Community College at the conference.

NCPBL proved it is truly Igniting Innovation, our 2012-2013 theme, by providing 12 different workshops, two general sessions and four leadership tracks as learning opportunities.

At the conference, members were able to attend workshops on Friday covering a range of PBL related topics such as Resume Drafting, Interviewing Skills and Making the Most of Your Time.

The Saturday morning session covered skills in four PBL areas, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Financial Responsibility and Professionalism. Participation in this section of the conference was pre-selected by each member to allow them to focus on their particular area of interest.

At the Friday evening session of conference, the highlight came when Isothermal’s Omega Theta chapter was named a winner of the Gold Star Chapter Award for completion of state goals in six different areas.

This is one of only two recognition awards given by the state organization, one at this conference and the TLLA which is given at the spring conference. Also at this session, members heard from their state officers and National PBL President Donnie Iorio from the University of South Carolina, who was a special guest at the conference.

The Saturday session included scholarship presentations, the annual Non-Trivia competition and a meet the chapter presidents in which the chapter president, Mary Brooks participated.

COLUMBUS – The fourth annual ICC-Polk Scholars Golf Tournament was held recently on a beautiful day at Bright’s Creek Golf Club in Mill Spring. Eighteen teams of four golfers participated in a Captain’s Choice format.

The event is sponsored by the Isothermal Community College-Polk County Campus Foundation.

Proceeds of the tournament benefit Polk County residents in the New Century Scholars program and recipients of the Howard Olson Assistance Fund. The New Century Scholars program selects three seventh graders in Polk County each year and mentors them through high school graduation. Those who maintain good grades, participate in community service, and remain drug and alcohol-free receive two years of tuition-free education at Isothermal Community College.

The Olson Fund provides financial assistance to Polk County residents for courses at ICC Polk Center.

Major sponsors of the tournament were: Champions – Jeanne and Joe Mize, Masters – Rotary Club of Tryon, and Eagle – G.M. Tennant.

Golfers started the day with a buffet hot breakfast before the shotgun start. Isothermal volunteers delivered box lunches, beverages and snacks.

After the tournament, winners were announced on the Grill Room patio with over $2,000 in cash prizes awarded. Those closest to the Par 3 holes were Robert Carter, Wayne Rollins, Ken Shull and Ron Wingo. The lowest scoring teams were:

Mark Thursday, April 25th on your calendar now, and plan to attend a great free upcoming event.

Second-year students in Isothermal’s Applied Sciences department’s Advertising & Graphic Design program are polishing up their work for display in this year’s annual Portfolio Show, which is open to the public. The exhibit will be held in the main hall of the Student Center Building on Thursday, April 25 in two sessions: 10:30 a.m to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.

The 2013 Graphic Design Portfolio students have included our popular Photography Portfolio class once again, and the Mechanical Drafting Technology students have also been invited to participate for the first time — they will have displays set up in the connecting upper level lobby area.

Please join us for this multi-faceted group showing their college work encompassing art and illustration in a wide variety of media, B&W film and digital color photography, computer graphics, and product development samples. Graphic Design students featured will be:

Alison Darrow

Judith Darrow

Bryson Fish

Aaron Godfrey

David Guffey

Wallace Hamilton

Carly Kauffman

Samantha Kincaid

Several of these students will have photos from their previous Photography Portfolio showing available. There will be a number of prize-winning examples of t-shirt designs, holiday cards, posters, and book covers and more. Some examples of graphics students already producing “real world” work are Samantha Kincaid’s t-shirt design which was selected for the 66th Annual Tryon Hunt Club’s Steeplechase event, Alison Darrow’s commissioned illustration for a proposed architectural renovation of the Retro Cinemas building in Forest City, and Carly Kauffman’s redesigned brochures for Historic Carson House in Marion and newspaper layouts for several editions of the new Relax Bilingual Magazine.

Additionally, the following students from this year’s Photography Portfolio class will be exhibiting many award-winning black and white film photos, color film and digital photography, and examples of their computer photo editing skills:

Haley Bedford

Mark Edwards

The Isothermal Board of Trustees made the announcement following a brief special meeting on Friday morning.

During the special meeting, the board publicly approved the hiring of Dalton and his contract unanimously after a short closed session. Dalton’s appointment is pending approval by the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges.

The announcement was attended by approximately 175 people – mostly college employees — in the college’s Library Auditorium.

“We believe Walter Dalton will bring exceptional leadership to the college,” said Grady Franklin, chairman of the Isothermal Board of Trustees. “He has served the residents of Rutherford County, Polk County and the state of North Carolina well for many years and we look forward to seeing the great things he will do here. The trustees saw the chance to hire Dalton as a unique opportunity, because, after all, it’s not often that two governors – one from each party – and the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff recommend a candidate for a job.”

Dalton will replace Dr. Myra Johnson, who is retiring after nearly six years in the position and a 33-year career in the community college system.

“I look forward to being a part of an institution that stands out in the best community college system in the nation,” said Dalton. “I am glad the college puts so much focus on learning, because I have a lot of learning to do.

“I am very honored and privileged to accept this position. And I look forward to working with each and every one of you — the faculty, staff, the community, the business community — to make sure Isothermal is meeting the needs of our students, meeting the needs of our future economy. And, working together, we will move forward.”

Dalton was North Carolina’s lieutenant governor until recently. In the November 2012 election, he was the state’s Democratic candidate for governor.

Currently, he is teaching at Gardner-Webb University and serves as special assistant to GWU’s president. Dalton is an attorney who served in the North Carolina Senate from 1996 to 2007.

He has served on the State Board of Education, the State Board of Community Colleges and the North Carolina Economic Development Board. He chaired the Senate Education and Appropriations committees. He is a former chair of the Isothermal Community College Board of Trustees. He earned his Juris Doctorate and a B.S. in Business Adminstration from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives in Rutherfordton.

SPINDALE (March 6, 2013) – The concert featuring Texas bluesman Delbert McClinton – formerly scheduled for Saturday, March 9 – has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 8, due to Mr. McClinton’s hospitalization for a respiratory infection.
A representative for the artist informed Russell Wicker, director of The Foundation Performing Arts Center in Spindale, of the cancellation on Tuesday afternoon.
“Delbert’s agent called late in the day, and I knew it wasn’t good when he started out by saying he was having a bad day. Next thing I know, I’m having a bad day, too,” says Wicker. “We immediately found the next Saturday that both the facility and Delbert were available, and then proceeded to start informing ticket holders of the change.”
Tickets for the March 9 show will be honored at the June 8 show. Patrons may also receive a refund. Refunds will be available until May 8, one month from the date of the new show. At that time, tickets sales will resume for the rescheduled performance on June 8th. For more information, patrons can drop by or call The Foundation Box Office Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 828-286-9990.

Dallas Herring on Wednesday, March 6. <img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-312" alt="Dr. W.
Grady Frankin, chairman of the Isothermal Board of Trustees, will unveil a portrait of Herring in the main corridor of the Administration Building in a brief ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

Dr. Herring, a Duplin County native, is considered the philosophical godfather of the state’s Community College System. As the chair of the State Board of Education in 1963, Herring was instrumental in the creation of the community college system. He may be best known for his belief that education should be available to all and that community colleges should “….take people from where they are, as far as they can go.”

Dr. Herring was appointed by Governor Luther Hodges to chair the State Board of Education, serving from 1955-77. In May of 1963, the General Assembly established the North Carolina Community College System. Under the leadership of Herring, the Community College Advisory Council was established to advise the State Board of Education. Herring was a life-long advocate for the state’s community colleges and the System’s “Open Door” philosophy – a result of Herring’s leadership during the System’s early years.

“Dallas Herring was a visionary who understood that education could be a defining factor in a person’s life,” said Dr. Scott Ralls, president of the N.C. Community College System. “His legacy has brought us to where we are today – one of the most comprehensive community college systems in the nation, educating people of all ages, training the state’s workforce and providing college transfer opportunities.”

In honor of the event, all 58 community colleges and the Community College System office are holding events to honor Herring. Many, including Isothermal, are unveiling portraits of Herring that were commissioned as part of the System’s 50th Anniversary celebration. The portraits were sponsored by Duplin Winery and by the North Carolina Community Colleges Foundation. At its last meeting, the State Board of Community Colleges also passed a resolution, naming its regular meeting room the Dr. W. Dallas Herring State Board Room.

COLUMBUS – The fourth annual ICC-Polk Scholars Golf Tournament was held recently on a beautiful day at Bright’s Creek Golf Club in Mill Spring. Eighteen teams of four golfers participated in a Captain’s Choice format.

The Olson Fund provides financial assistance to Polk County residents for courses at ICC Polk Center.

Major sponsors of the tournament were: Champions – Jeanne and Joe Mize, Masters – Rotary Club of Tryon, and Eagle – G.M. Tennant.
