Using the Online Selection Assistant
to Request Materials for the Library

Faculty involvement is highly important in the selection of library materials. We know your time is limited, so here's an easy way to review current holdings and submit requests for new items, all from a single web site. The Online Selection Assistant will allow you to search for books, music, or videos; compare searched items to material already in the consortium catalog; and create and submit selection lists for library review. The instructions below are designed to guide you through the Online Selection Assistant. You can also contact Kenneth Odom (ext. 381) for help if you have any problems.

1. Open your browser and enter the web address: http://www.onlineselectionassistant.com (or click on the shortcut from the Library home page in the box "Library Services for Faculty and Staff" in the right column.)

2. Click “Log On”

3. Enter the logon information:
        a. User Name: faculty

        b. Password: icc (all lower case)
        c. Click “OK”

4. Click “My Lists” on the menu near the top of the page
        a. If you have not created a list, or need to start a new one, proceed to step 5
        b. If you have already created a list and wish to continue adding items to that list, proceed to step 6

5. If you have not created a list, or if you need to start a new one, follow these steps:
        a. Type your name (ex: Kenneth Odom) into the “Add New List” box
        b. Click “Add”
        c. Click “OK” on the confirmation window that appears
        d. Your list should now appear as the last item on the “Lists Created By…” page

6. To begin searching for items to add to your list, follow these steps:
        a. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the light blue search box
        b. Make certain that “All Databases” is highlighted in the “Look In” section
        c. Enter your search terms in the “Find” box and select the type of search you wish to perform in the “As A” box. Examples:
Find: cold mountain As A: Title

 Find: study skills As A:
Subject

d. Click the “Search” button
        e. On the search results page you will see a list of “Databases Searched” along with the “Number Of Results” from each database. Click the database
name you wish to view.  Review the results of that database and select any titles that interest you by placing a check mark in the box to the left of
            the title.
        f.
Once you have selected the title(s) that interest you, select your list from the “Add Checked Items To List” drop down menu at either the top or
bottom of the results list and click the “Add” button. IMPORTANT: You must perform this procedure before leaving each page to save the items
            you have checked.

                Notes:
                1. The titles in the lists are not ordered by date; you may need to visit several pages to locate the most recent publications.
                2.
Depending on how generic your search criteria, it might be necessary to view more than one database if you are searching for a specific item.
The full results list is always displayed at the bottom of the page when you are viewing any specific database, so it is possible to navigate
through all the databases with results and/or redo the search without using the browser’s “Back” button.
                3. Keep in mind that the CMC catalog contains the holdings of all public libraries in Rutherford and Polk counties, as well as the college, so items
appearing in the “Local Database” results may not be located in the college library. If you want to be sure that the college owns a particular
item, you may add it to your list, and library staff will check and order it if necessary.
        g.  Click “OK” on the confirmation screen
        h. Repeat steps a. through g. as necessary to continue to add items to your list
        i. You may logout of the Selection Assistant at any time and return later to resume working on your list

7. When you are ready to submit your list to the library, do the following:
        a. Logon to the Online Selection Assistant using steps 1 through 3 if you have not already done so
        b. Click on “My Lists
        c. Find your list under the “Lists Created By…” section of the page
        d. Select “Submit For Review” in the drop down menu to the right of your list name
        e. Click the arrow to the right of the drop down menu to submit the list to the library
        f.  Click “OK” on the confirmation window
