About the College
What does "Isothermal" mean?
In meteorological terms, the word "isotherm"
refers to a line drawn on a weather map showing identical or even
temperatures. If something is isothermal, it is of equal or
constant temperature with respect to either time or space. Research has shown that it is not uncommon for an
isotherm
to curve through the area of Rutherford and Polk Counties where Isothermal
Community College is located. How do thermal belts control our weather?
When choosing a name for the college, the original Board of Trustees drew
from this regional characteristic to create a name that described the area and
represented the college in an inventive manner. So now when someone breaks
the ice by asking you about the name Isothermal, you'll be able to pass on part
of the school's unique history!
What is the name of the lake? How did the lake get its
name?
The lake at Isothermal is often called Lake Imogene, which is technically
incorrect. The big lake at Isothermal has never officially been named,
said Glenda Scruggs, secretary to the President of the College.
The smaller pond was unofficially named Lake Imogene by Dr. Fred Eason, past
president of Isothermal. "At the time the smaller pond was not much more
than a mud hole," remembers Scruggs.
"Dr. Eason's wife Imogene wanted something on campus named after her, so as a
joke, Dr. Eason said, "Well, we'll just call that Lake Imogene."
Where can I get a map of the Isothermal Walking Trail?
Isothermal Walking (Fitness) Trail
When may I fish in the lake?
Fishing is not allowed in the lake, except for two
times a year: Sports Day in April and Grub Day in October.
What do the building numbers and abbreviations mean?
Please see the Building Name
Key.

These are the college's ducks, right?
No, the ducks, geese, seagulls, herons, and other
migratory waterfowl found on campus are technically not the
college's responsibility. They belong to the community.
Whose cats are those that hang around the Library
and the Business Sciences building?
Isothermal's feral cat colony is also technically not the college's
responsibility, but through private donations and the combined
efforts of a few individuals at Isothermal and the Rutherford Co. Humane Society, all have
been neutered and vaccinated for rabies. However, the college campus
is not a cat retirement home; any strays or abandoned pets found on campus will be
captured and taken to the Rutherford County Animal Control Center located at
578 Laurel Hill Dr, Rutherfordton, NC. For more information, contact
Debra Jones at ext. 437.
