Martha Jane Powers
established the
Lee L. Powers Scholarship Fund in memory of her father, Lee L. Powers. Mr.
Powers was a moving force in the history of Rutherford County. He served
on many statewide committees affecting transportation and senior citizens,
as well as in other positions. The Rutherford County Commissioners named him to
the Steering Committee to obtain Isothermal Community College. Mr. Powers also
has been honored by the Shriners of the Oasis Temple as one of those with the
longest continuous service. The Powers Scholarship program has two
components, the Powers Service Scholarship and the
Powers Merit Scholarship.
The Powers
Service Scholarship Program
The initial offering of the Powers Service Scholarship is intended to ensure
total funding of tuition for all recipients. Once tuition demands are met and
if additional revenues are available, a stipend may be allotted for books. The
actual amount will be determined by the number of applicants and revenues on
hand. Scholarships are available to part-time students on a pro rata basis.
To apply for the Powers
Service Scholarship, the student must:

Complete and submit a FAFSA application prior to the fall semester for
which funding is sought. All eligible scholarship/grant and/or WIA/TAA
funding will be utilized before the Powers Service Scholarship is granted. |

Admissions and
financial aid files must be complete |
 |
Be a legal resident of the
State of North Carolina and reside in Rutherford or Polk
County. Residency is determined by the Admissions Office
according to state guidelines at the time of original
application to Isothermal Community College. |

Provide an
official copy of a high school transcript or equivalent in
accordance with the Admissions Policy of Isothermal
Community College. |
 |
Be seeking a Certificate, Diploma or Degree
within an academic program. Students pursuing a certificate or diploma, or
possessing a certificate or diploma upon admission to Isothermal are eligible
for this scholarship until they have achieved an associate degree. The
duration of eligibility will vary for those seeking less than the associate
degree. A student may receive up to six (6) semesters of full-time funding or
if a part-time student, the equivalent prorated. |
Recipients of the Powers Service Scholarship will
be required to:

Complete a minimum of 15 hours of community
service per semester by the last class day of the semester. The volunteer
hours will be documented by the Coordinator of the Powers Scholarship program.
If more than one volunteer activity is submitted, a minimum of 1 hour of
service must be recorded for each of the volunteer activities or sessions
cited. Community service hour requirements will be prorated for part-time
students. |

Maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 and demonstrate
satisfactory academic progress to retain the scholarship. All developmental
courses must reflect a minimum grade of “C”. A grade of “P” will also be
acceptable. Evaluation of progress will occur at the end of each spring
semester. |
In the event that funds are
insufficient for making awards to all qualified applicants, consideration will
be given to the order in which dated and completed applications are received.
The Powers Merit Scholarship Program

The Powers Merit Scholarship is intended to
recognize demonstrated meritorious academic achievement for six recent high
school graduates. |
 |
Each scholarship will be sufficient to cover
tuition and books at Isothermal Community College. |
 |
Five of these will be selected from the top 10%
of the graduating class for each high school in Rutherford and Polk counties
with at least 100 graduating seniors. These scholarships will be offered to
the graduate with the highest earned GPA or highest score on the official GED
test if a graduate of the Isothermal Community College Adult High School
program. If a student declines the scholarship, it will be offered to the
student with the next highest earned GPA until a student is selected from the
top 10% of the graduating class. In the event that two students have the same
GPA, the selection will be based on highest combined SAT scores. If the GED
test score is used, the graduate must have scored a minimum of 2750 on the
test.

The sixth scholarship will be available to a
graduate from any high school within Rutherford and Polk counties with less
than 100 graduating seniors. This scholarship will be offered to the student
with the highest combined score above the mean on the SAT test. If the student
selected declines the scholarship, it will be offered to the student with the
next highest combined SAT score until a student is selected from the top 10%
of combined scores for this population. |
To apply for the Powers Merit
Scholarship, the student must:

Be a graduate of a high school in
Rutherford or Polk County within the academic year within which the
application is submitted. |

If graduating from a high school with 100 or more
graduates, the student must have graduated within the top 10% academically of
his/her class. Graduates of the Adult High School program must have scored at
least 2750 on the official GED test. |
 |
If graduating from a high school with less than
100 graduates, the student must complete the SAT test prior to submitting the
application. |
 |
Complete and
submit an
Isothermal Community College Powers Merit Scholarship
application by June 15 prior to the fall semester for
which funding is sought. |

Submit two letters of character and citizenship
reference with the application. (References may not be relatives of the
applicant.) |
 |
Be a legal resident of the State
of North Carolina and reside in Rutherford or Polk County.
