Financial Aid Home

There are various types of aid available at Isothermal Community College.  Most types of aid require that the student complete and submit a FAFSA to the Federal Student Aid Program. We recommend that you do this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, if you have not already done so.  Other types of aid are:

This process usually begins in January and ends at the end of May.  Students are required to complete a scholarship application which can be picked- up in the Financial Aid Office or online (General ScholarshipAdobe gif).  The application contains three parts: the application which is completed by the student, the reference sheet to be completed by a former teacher, counselor or employer,  and a community service reference page for students that participate in community service.  The reference sheet must be completed and returned before the applicant will be considered for any scholarship.  It is up to the student to decide if they wish to be considered for a scholarship which has a community service component.  A complete listing of internal scholarships are in the Scholarship BookletAdobe gif.

Once the scholarship deadline passes, applications are reviewed for eligibility requirements for each internal scholarship.  A list of eligible applicants for each scholarship is sent to each scholarship committee member for review and selection.

It is the goal of the scholarship committee to notify each recipient by the start of the fall semester thus allowing these funds to be  available for the student to use on tuition and books for the fall and spring semesters.

Various organizations also notify the Financial Aid Office of available scholarships.  These scholarships as well as the online links are posted to the Isothermal website here.

Childcare

The funds for this childcare program come from an appropriation of the North Carolina General Assembly.  The program is designed to assist student-parents attending community colleges throughout North Carolina.  This is a block fund which means each community college is allotted a certain portion of the total appropriation.  This is a limited fund and therefore not all applicants will receive assistance.  If you are selected to receive assistance, you will be contacted in writing by Isothermal Community College.

Federal Work Study

This is a federally funded program for student employment which is generally on the Isothermal Community College campus.  These funds, like childcare, are a block grant given to the school so the positions available are very limited.  Students must fill out a work study application.  When an opening occurs, these applications are sent to the supervisors to review.  Those applicants that best qualify are interviewed.  This aid is known as work aid because of the service that the student renders.  A person must have filed a FAFSA to be considered for this type of aid.   Applications may be obtained in the Financial Aid Office or online.
