Technology Plan

IV.  Data, Software, Systems and Connectivity - Access and Support

Administrators, faculty and staff have access to an effective technology infrastructure in order to be productive and to enable them to provide high quality, cost effective, and technically advanced services to the College community. Students, as well, benefit from learning-based programs that utilize up-to-date and reliable technology. This includes workstations appropriate to needs, innovative and relevant software tools, wireless and wired networks, and timely and effective technical support. Personnel have access to central systems and the ability to create reports and directly obtain data relevant to their responsibilities. The College communicates increasing opportunities for access to data as these evolve, and provides training appropriate to the needs of personnel.

Goal 1.

IT will maintain all original software media such as cd’s, dvd’s, tapes, vendor software and download links. The software will be stored in the IT server room in a fire proof file cabinet.

Activity: Go around and meet with each department heads and explain our position on this procedure and then collect the software at that time. Copies could be made and kept at each department.

Timeline:  Ongoing

Implementation: An annual software inventory will be installed on the network that will go out and scan each desktop and laptop device on the network and it will do an software audit and report all software that is installed on each computer.

Rationale: Software control and maintained by the IT department will allow the college to stay in compliance with all software vendors and state audits.

Goal 2:

IT will put together a committee to begin the discussion and implementation for Datatel Web Advisor.

Activity: Let the committee decided on which part of the web advisor that should be built first and then have the System Administrator start building that piece and come back to the committee and demo the application and make changes from that meeting.

Timeline: Fall 2010

Implementation: The SA will install Web Advisor on both the primary and backup Datatel Server. He will install and test from the backup server and then push each part that has been approved and tested to the primary server.

Rationale: Web Advisor is being mandated by the state and eventually every community college will have to be running Web Advisor for all applications including the student and employee side.

Activity:  Relocate web server ( ) to a off campus host provider and upgrade the look and feel of the main Isothermal web site with new web applications and new updated pages.

Timeline:  Fall 2010

Implementation: Move college web site off campus to a secure host provider with better hosts support and more options that will increase the accessibility for students and employees.

Rationale:  With moving the web site to an off site host provider will allow the server to always be up with battery backup generators, connected to the best network and sitting in a more secure environment. The server will also have full time monitoring and  have  web designer on site that is able to advise on updates and design changes to ensure that our site looks professional and current with the latest bells and whistles.

Activity: Identify and document any network connection to the LAN that is utilizing a unmanaged hub and run new network cable back to a wiring closets.

Timeline:  Ongoing

Implementation:  Unmanaged hubs will be replaced by managed switches back to a secure wiring closet in various locations throughout the college.  Plans have been made and time scheduled to remove unmanaged hubs around the campus and to re-wire back to (IDF’s) intermediate distribution frame.

Rationale: Replacing un-intelligent hubs with switches will speed up affected segments of the network as well as create separate collision domains.  Bandwidth will be improved resulting in a more desirable connection for those currently connected to hubs.  Security for these nodes will be improved as well.

Activity: Upgrade the college’s Internet connection to 1 GB speed provided by MCNC.

Timeline: Fall 2010

Implementation: Equipment will be purchased such as GB switches and new IP Addresses assigned to different applications for the college’s uplink to the MCNC.

Rationale: Enhance available bandwidth for the expansion of online learning initiatives.

Activity:Identify and replace aging network components as needed.

Timeline:  Ongoing

Implementation:  Network components in various locations throughout the college will be replaced.  Plans will be made and time scheduled to remove aging network components and replace newer high speed components.

Rationale: Replacing aging network components will speed up segments of the campus network as well as create separate collision domains.  Throughput will be improved resulting in a more desirable connection.  Security for these nodes will be improved as well.

Activity: Install new Dell windows 2008 servers with Active Directory, Group Policies and login scripts to have the entire campus logging into a domain network.  Also purchase a Dell SAN’s (Storage Area Network) to have all employees and students store all documents including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF’s to the network.

Timeline: Fall 2010

Implementation: Receive equipment in the Spring of 2010, install, implement and train by the end of the summer 2010 session.

Rationale: It is important that Isothermal Community College have a network in place so that group policies and login scripts be in place to have drive mappings back to servers will follow each user no matter where they login and to have their printers mapped and all their data will be stored on a network server.

Goal 3.

Increase network access options to meet the current and anticipated needs of students and college personnel.

Activity: Upgrade campus wireless to 802.11 N technology for students and employees

Timeline: Spring 2011

Implementation: Replace and add new and faster 802.11 N Wireless Access Points at each building and test

Rationale: As wireless demands continue to grow throughout the campus, then it is necessary to keep upgrading our wireless equipment with faster technology that is available and more reliable.

Goal 4

Students and employees will be able to communicate through compatible e-mail systems.

  1. Provide students with an e-mail account.
  2. Provide adjunct faculty with an e-mail accoiunt.

Timeline: Ongoing

Implementation: Through an externally hosted server, the college will provide all students and adjunct faculty with e-mail accounts at Groups will be created within and GroupWise systems to facilitate communication among users and between e-mail systems.

Rationale:  The College should make every reasonable effort to provide connectivity for all students and employees to facilitate collaboration and communication in academic and administrative endeavors.
