Diogenes Café Semester Update
Campus Life Taskforce
September 26, 2007
The Diogenes Café was created to accommodate the need of pursuing global awareness focus in the open dialogue forum, while maintaining the initial purpose of Socrates Café. This happened during the Socrates Café meeting.
Discussion led to the perspective that we were to focus on global awareness instead of global education.
Two objectives this semester:
- Define global awareness
- Develop action plan to highlight China in spring
October 8, 2007
Global awareness defined during this meeting: Global awareness: recognizing the interconnectedness and interdependence of persons, places, and events on earth, from a current as well as historical perspective.
October 22, 2007
Begin working planning what possible activities could be effectively implemented in spring 2008 semester. List of ideas were provided via brainstorming session. Participants were instructed to explore resources available to further the action plan to next meeting.

Action plan for spring finalized. Email to be sent by Jo James to provide campus wide update on outcome of planning. Contents of email:
Thanks so much to all of those who have contributed to the Diogenes Cafe lunch meetings. We've done great work.
We've formulated a working definition of global awareness for ICC: Global awareness: recognizing the interconnectedness and interdependence of persons, places, and events on earth, from a current as well as historical perspective.
We have an action plan for highlighting China as our nation of focus for the spring 2008 semester. The actions specified include the following:
- Global awareness bulletin boards in various buildings across the campus. We will have students, faculty, and staff develop thematic boards that focus on China in a variety of perspectives.
- Global awareness focus on Sports Day. We will use an Olympic focus for Sports Day in recognition of the Olympics in Beijing.
We also have other plans under development for increasing global awareness:
- Reactivation of the International Week with a focus on China
- Health lunch offered by Campus Life will have a focus on Chinese cuisine
- Outreach to the local high schools in a variety of ways to incorporate the teachers China study program
- Outreach to the local high schools to utilize the international studies activities by the art and English instructors
- Develop a Global Awareness focused event for ICC faculty and staff
If you are interested in learning more, D'Cafe will have two more meetings this semester. We will be finalizing the plans in the last two meetings. The dates are as follows: November 12, 12 noon - 1 pm. December 3, 12 noon - 1 pm. It's ok to come late or leave early - based on your work schedule.

Campus Life will offer a focus of China on Sports Day in the spring semester.
Bulletin boards have been identified in the PE building and the Business Sciences building as global awareness boards. More boards will be identified – hope to obtain a bulletin board in Administration building, the LLC and an additional board in Business Sciences that will focus on technology.
