Afro-American Club of Isothermal Community College
The purpose of this club is to create more interest and understanding in black culture, to develop character, to encourage improvement in student-faculty communications and to strengthen the confidence of young men and women in themselves and in their work. It is open to all students regardless of race, sex or religion.
2008 Dream Gospel Celebration, commemorating Dr. MLK dram in Gospel Music was held on February 22, 2008, in the Foundation Performing Arts and Conference Center. The Afro-American Club and the Cultural Events Committee sponsored this event each year. In preparing for the event, a date and location is established. Then the members of the club invite various cultural community singing groups from the county to perform during the celebration. The Advisor coordinates an outline of the events with the club and the program is approved. Letter are mailed to each group performing, and flyer announcing the program are distributed on campus as well as contacts the public information officer of local advertisements. Then the Telecommunication is contracted to video the event. The maintenance department sets up the stage with choir riser. And the Advisor and Director of the Performing Arts Center sets up arrangements and schedule for each group to arrive early for sound check and listing of songs. The Club creates a power point presentation on the life of Dr. King and famous gospel artist from civil rights time frame. This presentation is showed during the program.
The night of the program, the club is set up and ready for the people to arrive. This is a fund raising event for the club, in preparation of cultural trip as a learning experience. In the past the club has had the opportunity to visit th MLK Center in Georgia.
Comments from the 2008 Dream Gospel Celebration
The program was successful, all invited groups participated. The general audience responded with a standing ovation which is good sign that they too enjoyed the program. About 200 people attended. Performing Arts Usher assisted with seating the group, and they too stated the program was very good.
The Club plan to present the Gospel Celebration in February 2009, in the Foundation Performing Arts Center. On the program will be the CC Mass Choir, consisting of student from R-S Central HS, Chase HC and East HS.
