Checklist for Transferring to a University Decide on a major to pursue. Need help deciding? Make an appointment for career counseling at 828) 286-3636, ext 384. Research colleges that offer that major. Try using: www.collegeview.com for a list of colleges (both private and public) in certain regions of the United States. Do you want to live on or near the campus of the college or university?
Would you like to stay in this area, but want to find a DISTANCE LEARNING option? Distance Learning is just what it sounds like it is, learning off the campus of the university or learning from a distance. Programs can be entirely online or a mix of on-campus and online. Others may offer degree programs at community colleges. Write or call the schools in which you are interested and request a catalog, application, financial aid information, and any other helpful information. Arrange to visit the school(s). Get some financial help. Remember to read deadlines carefully and apply as soon as possible. Isothermal’s Financial Aid department can assist you and may be able to offer some transfer scholarship information. See other helpful websites below: Request your official transcripts from Student Services in the Student Center. If you have attended other institutions, you will need to obtain an official transcript from that college, too. Some schools will require an official copy of your high school or GED transcript as well. Create an application portfolio. Some colleges and scholarships require an essay, resume, letters of recommendation. Remember the Career Center staff as well as English instructors are willing to proofread application materials. Also, keep in mind that some colleges require an interview. Mock interviews can be conducted through the Career Center as well. Apply for Admission. The general rule of thumb is to apply in September or early October if you’re applying for spring semester. If you’re planning to transfer in the fall, apply by mid-November the year before.
