Advising Session
Guidelines
Remember, academic
advising is the only structured service on campus in which all students have
the opportunity for on-going, one-to-one interaction with a concerned
representative of the college - you.
Guidelines for Academic Advising Sessions
Meetings with advisees should
attempt to make life at ICC as productive and trouble-free as possible. You
should be ready to work with the student to help solve any problems that the
student encounters. These meetings are also a time to make certain that the
academic choices that students make correspond with their career goals.
To prepare for these sessions, the following guidelines should be
followed:
1. Read and review the Advising and Registration Guide for Academic Advisors
Handbook periodically.
2. Maintain and update an advisement information sheet on each advisee
whenever an appointment takes place. Specific items to be noted are:
A. Student's stated
educational goals;
B. Any acknowledged personal or academic difficulties;
C. Work plans, health concerns;
D. Accurate record of advice given each student, including referrals;
E. Notes to indicate whether advice was followed and if not, why student
has not done so.
3. Make contact with an
advisee at least once every semester, setting up in-person conferences as
necessary - remember most students who leave school do so before the sixth
week. At-risk students may need a third week check-in.
4. Be available and provide appropriate academic guidance and counseling as
necessary. Be especially supportive of students who have been taking reduced
loads, including remedial courses. Let students know your drop-in and
crisis-appointment policy.
5. Keep an accurate record of courses taken and grades earned, both at
Isothermal Community College and other institutions, to insure that
requirements are fulfilled and to check on overall cumulative grade point
average for graduation. Since this is ultimately the student's
responsibility, provide a worksheet that you can review together.
6. Schedule appointments with students whose academic standing places them
in "academic difficulty". Refer students to support services in the
Developmental area: reading, writing, math, study skills, SI, and peer
tutoring.
7. Follow up on students who do not come in to discuss next semester course
selection or who express an intention to leave Isothermal Community College
before graduation. Refer students to the Counseling Center for personal
and/or career counseling. Students most in need of advising services are the
ones who do not seek it out voluntarily. |
