Advising and Registration Guide
For Academic Advisors

The Advising Session for Returning Students

I. Greet the student and ask a few questions about the student's progress and plans. Demonstrate your interest in the student as a person. Ask if there are questions for which you can answers or provide references.

  1. How are you enjoying life at ICC?
  2. How is each of your classes going?
  3. Do you know where to get help for these classes?
  4. Do you know where to get help if you encounter any problems? [Advisor may refer student to campus resources]

II. Discuss the student's schedule for the following term, considering his/her basic skills levels and individual needs and commitments (including family, work, sports, and needs).

  1. What is your current involvement in any kind of extra-curricular activities, such as campus groups or part-time jobs?
  2. Which schedule will work for you presently, a full-time or a part-time schedule?
  3. Is financial aid or insurance a factor in your scheduling now?
  4. In which academic areas do you still need to take courses before graduation?
  5. When do you plan to graduate? (If soon, “When did you last update your resume?” OR “Have you completed your applications to continue your education?”)

III. Remind the student of the registration process, the deadlines, and his/her responsibilities.

  1. Do you understand that you must pay to keep from having your schedule dropped? (Provide the advisee a copy of the deadlines for payment with PURGE dates.)

IV. Suggest times or occasions (such as when early course difficulties arise, midterms, pre-advising scheduling) when the student should see you, and provide the student with your office hours.

V. Complete notes in the student's folder so that you can remember advice given, commitments made, and concerns voiced. It is suggested that you document, or write it out and ask the student/advisee to sign and date it.
