The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program at Isothermal Community College will:
-
Give students
an opportunity to gain confidence in targeted courses and help students in
transferring that confidence to the classroom,
-
Give students
an opportunity to assimilate knowledge in a group setting, while attempting
to foster the ability to draw on prior knowledge to guide them through
current problems,
-
And allow the
students to be vocal about the subject matter by answering questions
concerning lecture, notes, homework, assignments, tests and quizzes.

We strive to increase student grades, retention, and graduation rates.

Kara Sims (SI
Leader for Statistics and College Algebra):
"I enjoy helping others explore the world of mathematics. During my
sessions, students enjoy a relaxed atmosphere where they are free to
study the subject, complete the homework, ask questions, and review for
test. I have a very good understanding of the classes and I am always
learning more. I am anxious to share this understanding with other
students, whether they need a push to help pull up their grade or just a
little nudge on that one homework problem. Each student is important to
me, and I always try to give them personal attention and as much of my
time as possible. It is my goal to give all of my students the
confidence to do well in math." |
Alesha Logan
(SI Leader for Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology):
"I wanted to become an SI Leader so that I could positively impact
the lives of many nervous and apprehensive students taking on
challenging courses. For many, college courses can be more demanding
than anything they've ever encountered before in their life. Science
courses can be very difficult, and many people create various prejudices
about these classes. As a result of this, they can become intimidated
before they even begin. It is my responsibility to ensure them that
Isothermal is concerned with the academic success of their students. I
make an effort to reassure every student that they each have an equal
opportunity at earning satisfactory grades in each and every course they
take. I enjoy seeing the students I help excel in class, and comprehend
the concepts they are learning. It is one of the most rewarding things I
have ever done in my life. I hope that through my work as an SI Leader
here at Isothermal, someone would have an impacted life and a different
perspective about college as a whole." |

Rachael Pritchard
(SI Leader for World Civilizations I & II):
"The best part of being an SI Leader is seeing the reaction on
student's faces when they get back a great grade on a test or a quiz. I
love being able to help students get an A. When students come into class
many are too nervous to ask for help from the teacher, and I want to be
there as a support for them. Some people just need to be told that they
can do this. I am there for
whatever reasons, whether it is reassurance, note taking skills, or
preparing study guides for tests. When a student comes up to me after
the semester is over and says 'I could not have done it without you' it
makes me feel glad to know that I helped. Knowing that I helped make a
difference in a students' life is the best part about being an SI
Leader."
