Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) 1. What is SI? SI is an academic assistance program that attempts to enhance traditionally difficult classes with regularly scheduled, out of class, peer facilitated review sessions. 2. Is SI a remedial service? No. SI targets the most difficult classes on campus, and is available to all students. Because of this, SI is not a remedial service. 3. When and where does my SI session occur? To find out the times and places of your SI session, please click on the tab that is titled, "Schedule." You are also encouraged to check with your SI Leader. They should have given you a calendar that lists the time and places. 4. Does SI cost me anything? No. SI sessions are open to all students in the course and are attended on a voluntary basis free of charge. 5. How will SI benefit me? Those that use SI will discover better note taking, organizing, questioning, and problem solving skills. Students will also have a chance to prepare for upcoming exams and continually review course material. Student who regularly attend SI are more likely to earn higher grades too! 6. How does an instructor obtain an SI Leader for their classes? Instructors should make this desire known to their classes and to the Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction. Instructors should also ask any potential SI Leaders to visit the Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction. 7. What should I expect from an SI Leader? The SI Leader will attend a three day training session at the beginning of the semester. The SI Leader will attend all classes. The SI Leader will also conduct SI sessions throughout the week. The SI Leader will also support the instructor in and out of the classroom in every way. The SI Leader will assist the Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction in data collection by the administering surveys throughout the semester. SI Leader will also assist students in the assimilating course material. 8. How does one become an SI Leader? A student becomes an SI Leader by demonstrating competence in course material, and winning the admiration of the instructor and also their peers. The potential SI Leader will also sit through a brief interview with the Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction. |
