Who We Are English and Reading Mathematics FAQ Advice for Adults Returning to School Learning Support Services at ICC

What is Academic Development?
Academic Development provides courses in reading, writing, and math to prepare students for the college-level courses ahead. In these courses, students learn ways to develop advanced methods for learning and thinking about college subjects. Academic Development courses help students fill in the gaps for things they may not know well and build strengths for more effective study. In other words, these courses help students prepare to achieve excellence.

Why do I need to take Academic Development courses?
Your placement test scores indicate that you need at least one of these courses to be successful in your other college courses. Most students need at least one Academic Development course before beginning their college-level courses.

Will I get credit for taking these courses?
You will get “institutional credit”—that is credit toward full-time status for financial aid, parents’ insurance, and Isothermal Community College purposes.

Will it matter if I miss class?
Yes. Attending class and participating are directly related to success as a student. Since the classes offered in Academic Development are usually the first ones college students take, we require evidence of attendance and participation to get students in the habit. You must attend at least 90% of your class sessions in order to pass the course.
