RED 080,
Introduction to College Reading
RED 080 prepares students for
success in RED 090, Improved College Reading. Students in RED 080 learn
effective study skills, how college reading works, and how to make difficult
reading easier to understand. They work on ways to figure out exactly what
difficult words mean and how to use them and how figures of speech mean more
than they seem to mean. They learn to find the most important information and
how to use supporting details to fully understand the points college writers
make. They also learn the patterns human beings think and write in and the
simple and complex levels of human thinking and writing. Classes do projects
that include graphic organizers (information maps) and research projects. As the
course progresses, RED 080 students pull all of these pieces together in an
introduction to critical thinking (higher-level thinking).
RED 090,
Improved College Reading
RED 090 prepares students for the reading portion of ENG 111 and for the
many college courses that involve a lot of difficult reading and/or a lot of
difficult vocabulary. The course begins with some helpful information about
effective studying and effective reading for college. Students work with
college-level whole language—learning multiple ways of knowing, understanding,
and remembering written information. As students learn background information
for some of their future courses, they also learn some Latin and Greek word
parts that are an important part of English, and how to use those word parts and
the other information in the text to figure out exactly what words mean and how
to use them. They learn to identify main ideas and to see how supporting details
make main point clear. They learn to see multiple layers of meaning and to make
the kinds of connections that college-level thinking requires. Students will do
individual and group projects that will include graphic organizers (information
maps) and research. In the last part of the course, students will pull all the
pieces together with work in critical thinking and evaluating information.
ENG 095,
Reading and Composition Strategies
ENG 095 combines ENG
090 and RED 095 in one course, so it requires higher ASSET or Compass placement
scores than ENG 090 and RED 090 do. This is an excellent course for students who
place into ENG 111 in either reading or writing and into an 090 level course
with the other score. ENG 095 is designed to use what students know and learn
about reading to improve their writing and to use what they know and learn about
writing to improve their higher-level reading skills. They will learn that human
thinking and the English language work together using patterns and conventions
that both readers and writers can improve using study skills and knowledge
about how human thinking and the English language work. For more information,
see the course descriptions of ENG 090 and RED 090. |
